The Effects of Being Lazy

Some people excel at being lazy and some don’t – which one are you? Is being lazy a toxic habit that you must quit? Is being lazy a good thing or a bad thing?

Do ever have those days when your alarm goes off, but you want to continue sleeping, so you snooze?

You have your lazy days. Nevertheless, you should get rid of laziness when it becomes so problematic that it affects your personal life, and everyone around you notices it.

Everyone should have some “lazy time” to relax while sipping a pleasant drink or sleeping, or watching a TV show. Everyone needs some time to rest.

“I don’t think necessity is the mother of invention. Invention . . . arises directly from idleness, possibly also from laziness. To save oneself trouble.” —Agatha Christie

However, it’s a thin line between laziness and relaxation. At times the temptation to sit on your butt forever and do nothing seems like a good option. In fact, very enjoyable. But everything overdone becomes disadvantageous for you.

Defining Being Lazy

Being lazy is being idle, and not doing anything you need to do. Choosing not to do something that you usually would do easily. You can do it, but you do not do it.

So, Bruno Mars sang, “Today I don’t feel like doing anything, I just wanna lie in my bed…”

“Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired.”— Jules Renard.

However, the definition of lazy could be relative. Let’s not justify laziness, let’s say your mind could tell you are lazy when actually you are not.

For example, if your job means a lot to you, and then you fall sick, and you do not have the energy to do it. Your boss could interpret it as laziness if they judge you by a day of slow work. You could feel lazy like Bruno Mars.

Is being a lazy a bad thing, or is it good for you? It depends on how you want to see it.

There is another kind of laziness that surpasses them all. Doing nothing when you are supposed to be doing something. Hence, having a lot of clutter around you, having a lot of incomplete projects. Those are the symptoms of laziness.

Once these symptoms reduce, you will be on the path of healing from laziness.

Will You Ever Stop Being Lazy?

It depends on your mindset. The first step is to restructure your thoughts and behaviour.

It’s the only step, but it involves a lot.

Restructure your Thoughts.

Imagine the ideal life you want.

Do you think you can get there with no effort on your part? Are you behaving like the person you want to be? Do you think someone will come and rescue you from your status? Do you imagine that a miracle will happen and you will win the lottery or something?

The following advice will help you restructure your thoughts and stop being lazy:

Avoid procrastination.

One key reason you are lazy is that you are into the habit of procrastination. You like to postpone doing things that you ought to do to a later time, and you have a lot of excuses.

You have the distorted idea that you have all the time in the world. Hence, you put things off. The more you put things off, the more they pile up, and the bigger the work will seem.

Here is a simple example; after having breakfast, you pile your plates in the sink and reason with yourself, ‘these are very few utensils I will wash them later before lunch.’

After lunch, you again give an excuse to yourself, ‘my stomach is very full, let me rest a bit then I will wash them.’

Before you know it, it is supper time, and again the plates pile up.

The cycle may continue through to the next morning. By the time you wash your dishes, the task will seem daunting.

However, had you done the assignment in bits, things would have been easier and faster, and less tiresome.

Avoiding procrastination will require a great deal of self-discipline on your part. Practice doing your tasks as they come.

20 Toxic Mental Habits to Quit

Watch the company you keep.

The friends you associate with can influence your behaviour significantly. If these friends are lazy people, when will you ever get the energy to do anything constructive? You will waste your lives and time together.

“Stay away from lazy parasites, who perch on you just to satisfy their needs, they do not come to alleviate your burdens, hence, their mission is to distract, detract and extract, and make you live in abject poverty.” —Michael Bassey Johnson.

For a lazy person, the best company for you is the people who make you feel like you are the laziest person on earth. Why? They will motivate you to do better to deserve their company.

Keep friends who inspire you to work harder and to be smart in your activities, whether it is work, exercise, or academics.

Be concerned about your future.

Of all the prominent names on earth, their personal efforts made them recognized in whatever field they pursued. They did not wait for handouts. If you want to be great, suffer now by getting out that bed, go to work, and you will sleep later after you have achieved your greatness.
